Also, I believe my xorg.conf settings are ok because several 3D games work at high resolutions, GLX gears gives me about 13,000fps, and I've never had a problem making the nvidia-glx driver work with this machine since ubuntu 
6.10 (other than to add 1280x1024 as a screen resolution choice).
