That got me a little further along. Now the system is erroring out
with a type of media problem. So I tried just playing a dvd with
mythdvd and that does not work so I think my problem keeps getting

Sorry, did not catch the mythubuntu in the title. You could try
installing all the various deps for being able to compile mythtv. Its a
bit of overkill but you never know when you want to compile your own.
Try the command "apt-get build-dep mythtv"
