Looking forward to hear what you come up with!

Sadly, airport express + iTunes. It just works. I love Myth but this is the best solution I've found for my house so far.

I'll second this, without the regret. I've never had a squeezebox, but I did give slimserver/softsqueeze a shot at being my home audio system and found it lacking. I'm a big fan of iTunes to begin with, but I would find the iTunes/Airtunes playback model superior regardless. Given that I have a laptop that is always close at hand, I would rather use it than a two line display and small remote as the interface to my music collection.

In addition to being better suited to my needs, an airport express is half the cost of a squeeze box - and it is a router and print server. Alternatively, an apple tv is the same price as a new squeezebox.

Don't run windows or mac os on your laptop? Find an old win2k box to serve as your iTunes host/RDP server, or check out iTunes under wine (I think I read somewhere that it is running under wine now).

Admittedly, I have gone too long without giving amaroK another shot, but I've completely fallen for the iTunes music acquisition model so it may be too late for me. It wasn't the lack of a legal music acquisition service that drove me to iTunes, it was the lack of a reliable one that let me keep the music I bought.
