I had almost the same experience as you, except longer. I tried to
build a MythTV box for about 5 years, nothing ever worked properly, bad
digital tv reception, disks dying, linux not building, random crashes
on almost every part of MythTV, channel changing taking 11 - 15
seconds. So I gave up and started again about a month ago.

I bought completely new hardware. Within 3 weeks I had a working HTPC
running Gentoo & MythTV 0.20 with a Dual Tuner card. Its already
in the lounge room connected to my TV and has an excellent WAF. Its
recording shows, we are watching them almost every night. It plays
mp3s, CDs, DVDs, the digital sound works in music, tv, DVD. I have had
mythfrontend crash twice (when changing channels quickly), but never
mythbackend.

At the moment I have 2 problems with it. I can't get my VFD or Remote
working, but I am sure I will resolve these two issues.

My point is, it is probably your hardware. What I did was to find
someone who had a recently working system and went out and bought
exactly the same hardware as them. The other thing is that the last
couple of versions of MythTV are very stable 0.19-fixes and 0.20-fixes.

My Hardware:
ASUS A8N-E SKT939 NF4-U AMD64 M/B
AMD Athlon64 X2 4200+ Dual Core
2 x 320Gb Seagate SATA2 HDD
Gigabyte 7600GT Fanless 256MB PCI-E X16 Video Card
Dvico Fusion Dual Digital 4 DVB card.
Silverstone LC16 Case
1 GB memory (can't remember brand).
DVD-RW (can't remember brand Lite-on or LG).

Good Luck, don't give up completely, try different hardware.
type="cite">I am a couple years into a very unsuccessful relationship
with MythTV. I've reached a low-bottom tonight - the backend crashed
and failed to record Gilmore Girls which pissed the wife off - and when
I went to watch the only Colbert Report it recorded for some reason and
had the sound not work. I have solved the sound problem at least a
dozen times - and tonight the F10 + F11 keys no longer seem to affect
the volume. Why? For the love of christ WHY?

I am close to the edge. I need help. I know this system can work -
and I have had some glorious moments of streaming live TV to random
computers - but it's just seeming to not be worth it!

I subscribe to this list, I comb the wikis and newsgroups - but I just
can't take it anymore. I call home and the wife says, "Myth crashed
again" and I want to throw the phone into a lake and never use
electricity again.
