I don't know anything about the NY area, I'm down in Texas. NYLUG looks
like a well organized site. They have a mailing list and IRC channel.
Should be a great place to start for those off topic questions you
have. Sounds like you have a busy life with wife + kids, and it may be
you'll
never get to go to an actual meeting with your LUG, but you can still
join and make use of its mailing list and chat.<br>

You'll get a flood of "this distro is best" responses where ever you
go. You'll just have a make a choice, chances are your the distro that
you get successfully installed first will be your distro of choice from
now on. Back when I started I had several failed attempts at installing
various distros never getting anything to really boot. Finally I got
Slackware installed on the first try and I used it for the next 5 or 6
years. Now a days I use Fedora but mainly because I have a linux job
and we are straight Redhat at work, so it eventually came home with me.<br>

If you play WoW as little as you say then dual boot is probably
easiest. Getting things running with Wine will take time away from your
game enjoyment. Easier to do a quick reboot once the kids are in bed,
then reboot when you done, turn off the monitor and go to bed. When
everyone wakes up the computer will be sitting in linux. <br>

Depending on what city you live in and how large it is you may want to
search for your local LUG. That's Linus Users Group, most of these
groups have a mailing list they help each other with wide variety of
problems, and in the bigger cities they have 'install parties' where
geeks get together with hardware and install linux on it. </div>

performance was kind of "meh" for me. I've heard reports that straight
wine actually runs it better than Cedega, but IMHO nothing will run it
at as smoothly as Windows. Also every now and then a patch from
Blizzard will break something with wine, causing you to spend the next
day or two surfing some forums to get a fix for it. You'd probably be
happier dual booting for games. </div>

<div>that's my issue here. Since having a baby i really dont' spend
too much time on the computer, or anything else for that matter. As it
is my xbox 360 is collecting dust (waited in line, found out we were
pregnant 3 weeks later, waste of money). So when I do get on a
computer, it usually is to play WoW. Don't want to buy Vista at all,
so was trying to ease myself into Linux and get off from my dependence
on Windows.
