I think there were some kernel bugs regarding the 5500, which didn't get solved until 2.6.20. I know that in 2.6.19, the signal strength was bugged and always showed 0, so it's not unlikely that there were some other bugs in previous kernel versions that are giving you problems.
<br><br>As for mythbackend crashing, I don't know. It could be related to the theoretical bugged kernel drivers though. I've had mythbackend crash on me for not too different reasons (which were my fault).<br><br>
