When I've done this in the past with an (a year to 18 months ago), it
really messed up the 'start menu' (or whatever it's called in Linux).
Application links were all over the place. Do you know if that's still
the case or if it's been sorted out somehow?

Worst case scenario, you can edit the menu yourself and "try" to fix it. You
can click right in the menu and edit the menu. The changes will be stored in
the directory .config in your home directory.
