Is there any way to kick off a transcode job remotely, without running a
remote frontend? I looked around Mythweb, but I don't see any way to do
it. It'd be nice to be able to select some shows in Mythweb to
transcode to lower quality, so I could download them later. My backend
system is kind of limited CPU-wise so I don't want to just transcode
everything.

Yes, I agree this would be great but I don't have any hints as to whether anybody is working on it. I took quick peek in MythWeb once to see if it would be trivial to add but I'm afraid my knowledge of PHP and backend communication were simply not up to the task.
