I'm not expert (I don't have this setup) but I have been following opinions very careful since I just ordered an AMD based system.

What I have seen is that HDTV playback requires at least a 3500+ (fingers crossed, since that is what I'm getting). Furthermore, my experience so far with the most recent versions of Myth has convinced me that this is not simply a CPU power issue. I have a P4
2.4 GHz process in my media center now and this same chip could decode HDTV signals on my Windows machine without any difficulty but I was unable to get HD playback working on my Myth system (yes, I tried all the little tweaks out there). My sense is that beyond CPU there are lots of other systemic issues with X and video drivers. I've seen people with 4200+ systems saying they can't get HD playback to work but I've also seen notes from other people who used older versions of Myth on 3200+ systems. So I don't really know what to tell you.
