I have a Geforce 6800 connected to a Toshiba 62hm15a via a DVI-HDMI
cable. I get BIOS messages on the TV as well as the Ubuntu splash
screen, but to get xorg working was pretty much hell. I had to install
the nvidia drivers, use the nvidia config tool to save the EDID, parse
it to get the valid modelines for xorg.conf. Even then, I can't get a
1080i resolution even when I have the modes for it and I've seen the TV
go that high before. Lucky for me I'm satisfied with 720p.<br>

720p. I don't see anything until X starts up and starts outputting a
720p signal.

I have a 6200 card with a 32" Viewsonic HDTV LCD.
I don't do anything special with my xorg.conf file.
When my PC boots, I see the BIOS boot / Linux boot
messages on both my 32" HDTV and my 21" desktop LCD.
Once X-Windows starts, I get my dual desktops.
Since ViewSonic is a PC based company... that may have
something to do with it...

through VGA or HDMI or both. That setting will control what you see on
boot, until the system starts explicitly sending output to the HDMI
output socket. Works that way on VIA boards as well as others...

Thanks Geoff, but I don't have those options. Wouldn't that just apply for the onboard video? Mine's a separate card.
