Raid and LVM scare me due to added complexity. I have heard
horror stories about a dead raid controller losing everything. A

agree, which is why, in most situations, I advocate using software
RAID. It guarantees that you can use that RAID on any device
which supports Linux. <br>

But rsync (or cp) is so much simpler for mostly static stuff (and idiot
users like me). Software RAID should be safer, but it still adds
complexity to the system.<br>
