Sometimes the linux kernel may crash but not be able to write to your local messages file.

If you have another linux box on your network, configure it to accept syslog messages from your myth box. On your myth machine that's crashing, install the netdump package and edit it's configuration. You only need to specify a syslog server, leave everything else as is. Restart the netdump service. It's highly likely that you will get a complete trace of why your kernel is crashing, if that's what's happening.
