<div>I have hosed my system and wanted to pass this by everyone to see what you thought. I can no longer use rpm on my system, and rather than try to match all dependencies restoring it, I wanted to upgrade the system to fc5 using a dvd, then upgrade .18 to .19 using yum. Will this work? or should I just start from scratch?

Of course you need access to fairly similar box (like a frontend). Getting a list of files in a package "rpm -ql <pacakge name>" and copying them over should be quick. It might not work, but full re-install is always an option.
