This sounds very much like my sharp. On my sharp LC-37D40U I have a similar number of inputs, however they are grouped. I have actually 5 complete input sources with about 9 different input types. Input 5 is an HDMI only input, Input 4 is an HDMI input but it also has the white/red audio in (the standard RCA in), Input 3 is for some video types and has svidio and component video in...etc. What this means is that you have an ability to hook up many types of devices to your TV based upon the different input types, and for each "input" to the TV you have various options that you can select from (svidio, component, composit, hdmi, etc.) Again, on my TV there's a button that pulls down a dropdown, in the dropdown I have 5 input sources to match the 5 inputs on my TV. If you select TV at the top it displays standard TV, if I select 5 (the HDMI only) it switches to my HighDef DVD Player, if I select 4 it switches over to my MythTV box (using DVI -> HDMI and Mini->RCA audio), etc.

As far as I can tell, if the TV is powered off you STILL get your EDID information.<br><br>Now as to modelines: EDID is retrieved every time you boot X, so if you setup X with a standard monitor, boot the system with X running, unplug the monitor and plug in your TV, it's
99.999% sure to give you an "out of range" message on your TV. If however you then stop X and re-boot it, it's 99.999% likely to come up in SOME resolution that your TV understands (VERY likely 720x480 or a 480p mode). If your TV is like mine (and i'm guessing it probably is) you will have several resolutions that are supported: 720x480 (that's the generic 480p TV resolution), 1280x720 (That's the generic 720p High Def resolution), and you'll probably see an EDID line for 1920x1080 with the interlace flag attached to it (that's the generic 1080i high def resolution), it's likely however when you look FARTER down the list and see the valid resolutions that Xwindows desides you have you will NOT find the 1080i resolution as a viable one...there is some setting (I forget which, i've been dealing with 720p resolution for the last month and a half i've had the box up) that will tell the NVidia driver that it's "ok" to use the interlaced resolution (it's an EDID flag that I forget off the top of my head...something like Ignore EDID Vsync or something like that).
<br><br>Now, I agree that you SHOULD be able to turn off EDID and the modelines that you have in there should work, however i've had issues on my Sharp where even with the EDID modelines specified by EDID as valid modelines, the TV decides it doesn't like them. So turning off EDID might not be your solution, on the other hand it might.
