the UPS. E.g. the output voltage of my UPS drops considerably (by design!) in
case of a power failure. A switching power supply in a computer can handle
this but other devices may not. Once I tried to use my cord shaver off the
UPS. Not a pleasant experience... but it was an emergency ;)

I keep everything in my back end on UPSes. The cable modem (which also
runs my phones), router, hubs, computers... Pretty much everything
except for the monitors - not a big deal because my laptop battery
lasts longer than the UPS batteries so I have ssh access to my machines.<br>

I have found that the cable company has about 8 hours of UPS service as
well on their end, so my phones, internet access, ability for mythtv to
record shows, all stay active while the electric is out and the UPSes
have power.<br>

PS: Don't plug anything with a motor (like an electric shaver) into a
UPS - they are not designed for it.<br>
