what I am really curious about. I still have no idea what mode or
resolution VT[1-6] is using, but after 6 months of playing around, it
it the only thing that causes my TV to kick into 1080i mode.
Ideas on how to get the mode or resolution of the terminal?

I would love to know what resolution (and other mode detail) my nvidia
card is putting out at a given point in time. My TV switches mode from
1080i to 720p to 480p as I do different tasks. I'd like to be able to
see what the card is delivering to cause the TV to change modes.
I tried reading
http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86_40/1.0-2880/README.txt which did
teach me about /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/* but those files don't contain
that kind of info.
Suggestions?

run xrandr and you should get an output similar to:
SZ: Pixels Physical Refresh
*0 1280 x 768 ( 452mm x 271mm ) *60
1 1024 x 768 ( 452mm x 271mm ) 60
2 848 x 480 ( 452mm x 271mm ) 60
3 800 x 600 ( 452mm x 271mm ) 60
4 720 x 576 ( 452mm x 271mm ) 60
5 720 x 480 ( 452mm x 271mm ) 60
6 640 x 480 ( 452mm x 271mm ) 60
7 640 x 400 ( 452mm x 271mm ) 60
8 640 x 350 ( 452mm x 271mm ) 60
9 512 x 384 ( 452mm x 271mm ) 60
10 400 x 600 ( 452mm x 271mm ) 60
11 320 x 480 ( 452mm x 271mm ) 60
12 320 x 400 ( 452mm x 271mm ) 60
Current rotation - normal
Current reflection - none
Rotations possible - normal
Reflections possible - none
which is my laptop, the *'d line is your current mode.
