I was having the same exact problem... music and sounds effects but no
voices and nothing if I set xine to passthrough. My problem ended up
being the version of alsa. I had 1.0.7 for alsa-utils and alsa-libs,
but I had 1.0.6 of the alsa driver. Check cat /etc/asound/version and
see what it gives you.<br>

Here's what fixed it for me: apt-get install alsa-kmdl-`uname -r`<br>

<pre wrap="">LOL, I almost did this once with a live because of this BS, but I
doubt it would have helped. Keep the faith. :) It's a great sound
card, especially given the very low cost. Given that I basically only
ever use passthrough (except for playing Ogg/MP3 files, which are all
16 bit anyway), I doubt I will ever need anything different unless a
non-S/PDIF digital interface appears.
Which version of alsa are you running? I know I had problems with the
different variants of 1.0.6, so make sure you're using 1.0.7 (not
-rc?) or CVS.
Also, try xine instead of mplayer. The alsa support on each piece of
software is different, and frankly I've never gotten mplayer to work
as reliably as xine even though xine's configuration seems more
complicated at first.
Next, how is your Live wired to your AC3 decoder? I use just the
basic Live card with a coax connector going from (I believe) the white
(left) channel on a stereo mini->RCA converter sitting in the top (?)
mini jack, which on my card is gold instead of colored plastic, to the
S/PDIF in on my receiver. I'm doing this from memory, so it's a bit
fuzzy.
Finally, try putting the attached asound.state into a file
(e.g. /tmp/foo) and issuing "alsactl --file /tmp/foo restore". This
is my mixer config. Since the Live has so many mixer settings that
are so poorly documented, it took a lot of trial-and-error to get set
up correctly. If this works for you, I'll post a web page indicating
how to get this set up because I'll have positive confirmation that it
works for at least one other person. :) This will *only* work with
1.0.7, because some of the mixer controls changed names, etc.
Let me know what happens. I'm curious to hear if it works.
