I believe this issue is resolved. My computer shut down properly last night even with "Automatically update program listings" 
enabled.

I believe the cause was that mythfilldatabase was not configured correctly. My backups were not backing up the ~/.mythtv 
directory, so the xmltv files for my video sources was not restored when I restored my home directory, and these files had to be 
re-created.

In any case, mythTV is working as well now as it was before I upgraded my OS.

That means I still need to resolve the fact that the computer is not waking up at the scheduled time, but I need to do a bunch 
of tests before I start bothering people on this mailing list about that.
