Under ALSAMIXER there is no hdmi device, yet the sound, without vu control comes out the monitor headphone socket.
With another monitor, ASUS, there IS a hdmi sound device and the level can be changed

 The USB sound dongle was $10 so I’ll mutter the rude word, beeep, and keep using it, where all is works as expected
