I have not investigated how to add a password for the new internal http
server in mythbackend.
By default, MythTV only allows connections from the local subnet. As
long as you do not select "Allow Connections from all Subnets" in
"General -> Host address backend setup", somebody from outside your home
cannot connect, even if the port is open on the router.
For accessing remotely, I have a port open for ssh to a raspberry pi.
ssh forwards a port for VNC, so that I can log on to vnc on any of my
home machines using Remmina, and access anything I need. Do not use the
default port for ssh.
Everything is protected by my ssh password.
