L-TWC did do some research, and had even joined the
RDK alliance (which is the umbrella org for the solution
that Comcast extends and brands their version of as X1,
and Cox as Contour, and I don't remember what Shaw,
Rogers, and Videotron in Canada brand their variants).
[My recollection is Charter is technically a member of
the alliance due to their acquisition of L-TWC, but they
were a non-practicing member.]

Charter briefly looked too, but decided they would go
another way with their Worldbox.  However, they recently
decided to use the Comcast "flex" device for at least some
use cases, and the "flex" device is part of Comcast's X1
branded solutions.  It is not (yet) clear how Charter will
modify/deploy it, but one can hope that they will evaluate
what people like about the other providers offerings.
