You are correct there are some really old versions of MythTV that you 
can't directly update to current versions but you should be fine with 
anything like 0.25 or newer.


One thing I would say is depending on how big your database is and how 
many recordings, videos etc. you have it could take a long time to 
update the DB so be patient don't assume because it looks like nothing 
is happening that the update has frozen it could just be taking a long 
time especially with a large DB and an older version of MythTV with a 
lot of updates to perform. Also the backup that is created before the 
update can take a long time on large DB's so again be patient.
