I got it: when actually streaming for some reason the --conf option to
mythexternrecorder needs to be fully qualified (i.e.
/home/mythtv/mythexternrecorder1.conf rather than just
mythexternrecorder1.conf). This is weird, because mythtv-setup would
have needed to read the file in order to scan for channels (which it did
successfully). So this is a difference in behaviour between mythtv-setup
and the backend.

Thanks for your help; I am now waiting for the HDMI splitters to turn up
so that I can test with an actual STB signal sans HDCP.
