Patrick,

I had the same difficulties when I first tried to use mythfrontend on my
phone, I think what enabled me to finally get it connected was only after I
cut cable and got a chromecast with google TV, installed it there and got
that connected, then for some reason the app on my phone (which is a pixel
4a btw, ymmv) was able to connect.

I did a few things like gave all my android frontends unique but similar
names to facilitate the sharing of their settings.

I did a lot of googling and reading of the myth wiki for android tips &
tricks...

There is one that helped me a lot, it's how to set the regions of the phone
screen such that tapping in a particular area mapped to a particular
"remote / keyboard" key so that once you get it connected and able to play
recordings you can navigate & control stuff better.

I don't have much practice with it, but here is where I read about it:
https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MythTV_on_Android#Gesture_Support

there are different screen maps for live tv playback and recorded playback,
it's easiest to set or change those values via mythweb.

HTH,
