Can you swap the red cable and blue at both ends to see if the blue is now
missing? That would isolate the cable.

Great idea, I will try it, but TBH sudden cable failure seems like the
least likely cause.
Most likely the HDPVR has crapped out, because they do that.
But before I conclude that I need to find a way to exclude the 2nd possible
thing, i.e. the cable box composite output is hosed.
