Installing with Ubuntu is very easy for me, but what fun is that? :-)

A lot of great work goes into the packaging of Ubuntu and I'm wondering how
people who build from source deal with it.

I'm guessing that they first install the latest official package via the
ppa and then just build from source. I'm trying to wean myself off of
Ubuntu because of the use of snap. I guess I could move to PopOS which uses
Ubuntu but doesn't use snap.
