Suddenlink, in a number of locations, has been
using unencrypted QAM for the "basic" lineup
for those subscribing to TV service (you still
require a STB/CableCARD device for the
extended cable channels if you are not using
their streaming TV service plans).

It was expected that as Altice moved to consolidate
their newly acquired Suddenlink assets under
the Optimum branding that they would also eventually
move to encrypted QAM for all TV services which
would require a CableCARD. Reports are that
Altice has finally decided to pull the trigger on the
rebranding just recently, but also that they intend
to deploy FTTx and IPTV moving forward. As with
all such announcements, the schedules in any
particular location are vague (at best), but some
parts of Texas were explicitly mentioned as being
among the first.

btw, Suddenlink reportedly (all too) often
decides to regroom the unencrypted channels
so that one should get used to have to do a
rescan somewhat regularly if you are not
using a managed device (such as a STB or
a CableCARD device).
