As a workaround you can then change your video profile to use VDPAU.
And then a bit of a long shot, there is in the same menu Setup / Video /
Playback (IIRC) also a checkbox "Use original FFmpeg demuxer". This should
be UNchecked so that the MythTV demuxer is used which does have better
subtitle support than the original FFMpeg demuxer.
