Hi John,

I read your thread on Github and it occurs to me there's a possibilty you
have a hardware error.

I had a computer monitor that started behaving quite similarly.  No remote
control involved but it would sometime refuse to come out of screen save
when the signal was restored and it became difficult to turn on or off with
the power button. Switching off and on from the wall often fixed things for
a while.

Thinking there might be a problem with the switch that I could fix I took
the back off the monitor and found several bulging capacitors of various
values around the power circuit.  Replacing those capacitors cured the
problem.

Just a thought.
