Earlier I said that I get good playback of your clip when using either 
vdpau or NVDEV decoding on low-end nvidia hardware.  I've just tried 
again on a similar core2duo box with no decoding hardware.  The picture 
isn't too bad but both cores are very near 100% and 'mythfrontend -v 
playback' shows AVSync dropping around 4 frames per second.  That might 
explain why skipping, especially while recording, isn't doing what you 
expect.
