WAG: missing codec?  In File's Properties check in the Audio/Video tab 
and compare what plays and what does not.  Here I found I needed to have 
the snap version as well as the repository version.  "sudo snap install 
vlc"; you will now have two VLCs listed, can rename using Alacarte.
