Although dmesg does not mention firmware *and* /dev/dvb entries are instatiated putting a firmware file (in /lib/firmware) does result in working cards!
This happens on ubuntu but not on my SuSE system!

Just for the record I was unable to get 
# apt-get install mythtv
to give me a working system, so I built from src
