I use Debian, but I have a dedicated fe/be box, mariadb on another server.

I don't bother to update it so it has a long LTS :-)
I only recently moved house and threw the old Guts away and started with 
a new MB etc preserving the disks and recorded shows.
I also run TBS tuners so updating is a pain.
