If you do want to do the upgrade in place path, then investing in a
good SSD for the system drive will make the process *much* faster. I
was very pleasantly surprised at just how fast an Ubuntu upgrade would
run after I put in a Samsung 950 Pro M.2 drive in my MythTV box, even
though it needs PCIe V3 for full speed an my motherboard is only PCIe
V2.0
