Thank you, Stephen. No, it wasn't a typo, but the failure was new and
as far as I know the setting hadn't been changed. I'm back home now and
should be able to experiment with other systems. I see the TV has Auto
and Manual DNS settings, and I hadn't recognised the presence of that as
a switch. I may try a normal cable, although the TV manual (Panasonic
but 2012 models) say use crossover for the direct connection. The TV's
Connection Test failed the final step: 'Check server connection for
VIERA connect', which the more conventional setup here passes.
I get more comprehensive listings of mysql grants here, but maybe I just
had a broken DNS.
