Richard:   Ihat sounds good. But I had tried dropping the .rpm suffix 
earlier, with no luck.  Since I now have a rather cumbersome workaround 
I'm unlikely to try much else over the next few days, but thanks anyway. 
  Then I might just create the SRPMS and try letting mock --chain do all 
the RPM building.  Or maybe a fix will be revealed :-)

My last post had a typo.  /var has 50 (not 500) GB, of which 11 were 
available before the mock --chain build; now 7.9 GB.  There are yum/dnf 
caches going back to F23, so a clearout is probably due.
