At a minimum, setup a small room fan blowing at/across the external drives.
The cases tend to overheat easily, which will cause problems.
Also there is a good chance the data is still on the drive. Most
external drives use a firmware offset that makes the data difficult to
reach outside of the drives enclosure. Finding an identical enclosure
and swapping the drive should get the data accessible.
