It does sound rather like the switch. They can fail in "interesting" ways - I've had them "sort of" stop passing packets reliably, as in passing some packets but not others !

Certainly in a case like this, the obvious thing to do is swap the switch and see what happens.

The fact that some devices work and others don't could be simply down to slight variations in how the protocols are implemented. Behind the scenes there's actually a complete (albeit relatively simple) signalling protocol to allow the two ends to negotiate a link between them.
A few years ago we had a customer with 2 sites with a road in between. We sold them an optical link which turned out to have an "interesting" design feature which meant that it didn't work with all switches. The people who supplied and installed it for us couldn't tell us what the issue was - but we eventually tracked down that these units didn't negotiate the link properly so they would only work with managed switched where the port can be hard configured to a specific set of link parameters.

It's looks like it's a variant of their GS1nn models. I've always found* the [FG]S1nn models to be very reliable, so I'd have no hesitation in trying the 316.

* With work hats on, I've known a lot of networks run on them.
