Bill, thanks for the help.

In the end I frontended mythfilldatabase with strace so I could follow 
it through to the grabber.

What I was missing was /root/.xmltv.  I had misunderstood and thought 
the database path in the mythtv config file in /root/.mythtv which 
pointed into my $HOME/.xmltv was sufficient.

A symbolic link from $HOME/.xmltv to /root was all I needed. Its now 
working properly.
