Actually, a ground loop was one of my first concerns. After trying
electrical tape over the IR port on the HD-PVR (since my original
noticing of the recording anomaly was after pressing the power button on
my remote control, but squashing this theory after manually pressing the
power button on the TV), my next check was for a common ground.

All of the A/V equipment share a common ground (i.e. power strips from a
single source wall outlet), so I can't imagine a ground differential
large enough to have a noticeable consequence, right?

HDMI aside, there's enough copper between the various components of the
system (e.g. don't forget that the cable box and HD-PVR are connected
via component cables) that I figure a ground loop would show symptoms in
other ways (e.g. the telltale 60hz hum in the US).

Mike's theory of the HDMI CEC seems plausible. But given the amount of
time I use the HDMI right from the cable box vs. the time I've spent
troubleshooting this, it's hard to justify spending much time
specifically nailing down the "why" of it. But at least I have my
workaround! :)
