Hi Daryl,

maybe there are hints on the console screen. Sounds like you are using
Ubuntu.

When the system is shutting down press Esc to change from  shutdown splash
to text mode. Oder try pressing CTRL-ALT-F1 to CTRL-ALT-F6 to change to
console - maybe on one of the console displays are hints to identify the
reason for not shutting down properly.
