Thanks but the menu button didn't work in the builds from source, it 
worked in the frontend installed from the ppa.

For anybody else that is stuck

I downloaded the theme as a zip from https://github.com/MythTV-Themes 
and expanded it into /home/name/.mythtv/themes/Steppes.

Works fine.
