You don't have to restrict by username / password in an .htaccess file. 
Do it by ip address.  Deny the egress router if (and you are) using NAT
since that is what anyone outside will appear to be.  Then deny anyone
on your guest WiFi IP block if you want to lock things down.  Allow
anything left after that.

With some cleverness you should be able to do both, allow a username
from outside but allow internal access to be unrestricted.
