I meant to add another point:

If you do power a device from a more powerful supply than it came with
then be sure to add a fuse at the original power supply's rated current.
Clearly the purpose of that fuse isn't to protect the power supply, but
rather to prevent that too much energy is absorbed by the powered device
if it becomes faulty.
