I went with a clean 16.04 install/mythtv 29 with a database restore.

Sound did not work so I had to cycle through Frontend, setup, audio, options until I got one 
that worked.

As others have mentioned I had to delay startup until the USB tuners had initialised. I went 
for the mythbackend.service option
