Ah ha! I'd been wondering why this was broken on my Debian box (I newly
installed it so never had it working to compare) but didn't get to
investigate, this explains it.

Thanks for the hint/pointer. I've reported it to the Debian package in:
    https://bugs.debian.org/902684

(which I expect means Ubuntu will get fixed too)
