Forget all the stuff about compiling binaries on your own.

Simple steps

sudo apt update
sudo apt dist-upgrade.   # note that this is NOT just upgrade as shown in previous messages.

sudo systemctl stop mythtv-backend               # This will make certain it is stopped.

Wait 10 seconds

sudo su - mythtv

mythtv-setup

Once all the settings are verified, exit mythtv-setup. When asked to start mythtv, do NOT start it. Also, when asked to run mythfilldatabase, do NOT let it.

Exit.  # to get out of the sudo su

sudo systemctl start mythtv-backend
