K3B > Tools > Copy Medium > Only create image

works for me.  But I don't know the chances of success with commercial 
disks.  You still have to find the DVD, take it out of the box...

In K3B, IIRC, 'ripping' looks CPU hungry and slow.  I don't remember 
actually trying it.
