  I did this for a while with slingtv before they added their PVR feature.  Roku 
+ HDPVR with HDMI -> component converter.  However, this only worked with the 
older (manufacture date, not model) roku unit - it seems like the newer one had 
better HDCP support, so thus would not work.

  The Roku was convenient in that you can send it commands over http - so rather 
than trying to do IR blasting, I could send it commands (Select, arrow right, 
arrow right ,select, etc).  This required that I make a mapping of how may 
button presses to get to a desired channel, but it worked reasonably well.
