sda2, you can clone your install onto sda2 boot from that, mess it up, blow
it away, clone back, etc. You'll have to boot into a live environment. I
like to use partclone and the SystemRescueCD, personally.

partclone.extfs -s /dev/sda1 -b -o /dev/sda2 (no promises if syntax is
exact)
update-grub
grub-install /dev/sda
reboot and select the OS on /dev/sda2.
